Festivals

Adjudicator Workshops
Motivating students to continue their study of music is one of the most important and rewarding responsibilities of every WSMA adjudicator. By sharing your musical skills and expertise, you will actively encourage young musicians to reach higher goals. Be sure to check out the summer and fall schedule of adjudicator workshops, as well as registration information here.

Exemplary Soloist Recognition Project
The Exemplary Solo Recognition Project expands recognition of outstanding soloists at the WSMA State Festival. Adjudicators select the most exceptional student soloists at each of the state festival sites. This spring, state festival adjudicators identified 430 truly exemplary soloists.

Festival Committees Meeting
The WSMA Festival Committees will be meeting Monday, June 9 to review festival rules, procedures and bring member concerns to the Festivals Steering Committee and WSMA Board of Directors for possible action. If you have a suggestion or recommendation that you would like brought forward, please contact the committee chair directly. Contact information may be found here.

State Honors Music Project

Middle Level State Honors
Chair Lynn Seidl and the selection committee have announced invitations to the 2008 Middle Level Honors ensembles. Juan Tony Guzmán (orchestra director), Lynne Gackle (choral director) and Quincy Hilliard (band director) have selected a variety of traditional and contemporary music for the November 1 concert.

Accepted applications are due no later than June 30, 2008. Students will rehearse at Waunakee High School on Friday, October 31 and on Saturday, November 1 at the Marriott Madison-West. Additional information may be found here.

High School State Honors
More than 400 talented musicians, 40 staff and five conductors are all making plans to be at UW-Green Bay for the beginning of the 2008 High School State Honors Music Project. The orchestra, treble choir and jazz ensemble camp runs from June 14-17 and the band and mixed choir camp runs from June 18-21.

Students and staff will spend their time preparing high quality literature with nationally known conductors. Their dedicated practice and preparation will be for a pretigious performance during the 2008 Wisconsin State Music Conference held in Madison this October. Additional information may be found here.

State Marching Band Championships

Plans are under way for the 2008 WSMA State Marching Band Championships held yearly at UW-Whitewater's Perkins Field. The championships will be held on Saturday, October 18. The festival class will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the championships classes at 12 p.m.

For more information on the festival class or WSMA State Marching Band Championships, please contact Tim Wurgler.

Launchpad Finals Competition

Cheer on the Bands!
Twelve bands made up of high school students throughout Wisconsin are advancing to the Launchpad state finals competition on June 21 at Wisconsin Union Theatre (UW-Madison campus). This year's finalist bands will experience a touch of fame with the opportunity to learn from acclaimed Yamaha recording artists Ndugu Chancler (drummer) and Nathan East (bass guitarist) in the first-ever Launchpad Music Clinics held just hours ahead of the competition. Celebrate the reach of music education by coming out to observe the clinics and competition and showing your support!
