Student Audition Instructions

Dear WSMA Middle Level State Honors Audition Students, Teachers and Parents:

Thank you for registering to audition for the Wisconsin State Honors Music Project.  Please read the following material very carefully.  It will help you enjoy your Honors audition experience.

1.  As with other life experiences, thorough preparation is the key to success in your Honors audition.  Print and follow all Middle Level honors audition requirements.

  • Please arrive 30 minutes before your audition to ensure you will have enough time to warm-up.
  • Instrumentalists:  Memorize your scales and be prepared to sight-read an 8-measure exercise.
  • Vocalists:  Practice vocal warm-ups using your entire range and be prepared to sight-read an 8-measure exercise.
  • All students will attend a 15 minute Ensemble Class within an hour of their audition time.

2.  Directions to your audition location are available through the link below.  Allow plenty of time for road construction or weather delays.  Honors auditions are held regardless of weather conditions.

3.  Bring a pencil with you to your audition.  When you arrive at the audition site:

  • Report to the Honors Registration Desk.
  • The registration staff will give you audition forms that will list your audition room number and warm-up locations.
  • Write the name of your solo and the composer on your audition forms.
  • You will hand these forms to the judge at the beginning of your audition.
  • Number the measures of your solo on the original, printed copy for the judge.  Do not put your name, school or director's name on these forms or your music.

4.  This is an anonymous audition.  The judge will only know you by an audition number.  This keeps the audition process as fair as possible for all students.  All auditions are private. No spectators are allowed in the  audition room.  No student introductions are allowed.

5.  Instrumentalists:

  • Plan to perform a 3-minute segment of your Class A or B solo from the current WSMA Music Festival list.  The evaluator may stop you after 3-minutes to allow extra time for the remainder of your audition.
  • All instrumentalists will perform without accompaniment.

PLEASE NOTE:  Auditioning percussionists do not perform a prepared solo from the WSMA Music Festival list.  Please review the full list of percussion audition requirements carefully prior to your audition to be sure you have the necessary audition materials prepared.

6.  Vocalists:

  • Plan to perform a Class A or B solo from the current WSMA music list for events 401, 402, 404 or 405.
  • Vocalists may bring their own accompanist, or bring a pre-recorded CD/cassette tape of the accompaniment.  CD and/or cassette players will not be provided for the auditions.  Students using a taped accompaniment must provide their own CD/cassette player.

7.  Percussionists:

  • Timpani, Snare Drum, Xylophone and Marimba will be provided as much as schools can provide them.  Bring your own sticks and mallets.

8.  Unlike WSMA Solo & Ensemble festivals, you will not receive a copy of your evaluation form.  Honors auditions are competitive and are judged solely on the skills and talents you demonstrate during the audition.

9.  Students will be notified of their audition results by letter in early June.

Thank you and Good Luck to Everyone!
